Why is organic food so pricey?

Organic Food
. asked:

Shouldn’t it be cheaper since less fertilizers, chemicals, additives, and hormones go into making it. Or is it more costly because there are far less producers of it?
O ya duh that makes sense. And yes I agree it’s worth it.

its costly becase without fertalizers the crop yields less produce and without pesticides more crops are lost. supply and demand

Because of the lack of chemicals used on the foods, that takes more effort and work, and when you buy an organic product it goes all the way back to the worm that fertilized the plants that were fed to chickens and so on. I believe it is worth it.

becuase the crop itsself has no pestisides or any added fertizliers to it..

Its’ more expensive for a couple of reasons
    1) chemicals are cheaper than human labor and organic farming generally is a lot more labor intensive than conventionally managed farms. Especially in weed control. Currently there are few effective organic herbicides so weeds are controled through cultivation and mowing for the most part

    2) supply and demand. organic foods are the fastest growing sector of agriculture by far. IIR they have been growing at 20% per year for the last decade. Most other sectors except biofuels has been in negative growth for the pastr decade. less than 5% of US farmland is managed organically so you can see there just isn’t enough grown yet to keep up with demand.

It is a myth that yields are a lot lower on organic farms and in many cases such as drought areas organic farms yield better than conventional farms. It is true that yields are lower the first 5 or so years as the soils transition from chemical management to organic but after that most organic farms can easily keep up with conventional farms.

It is also a myth that no pesticides or fertilizers are used on organic farms. They are, they are just not synthetic.

i have noticed as petroleum goes up that non organic foods are also going up in price and that organic products are staying steady so soon organic may well be cheaper.
