leaf hoppers in organic garden?
samekid480 asked:
What can I do, they are everywhere? I’ve already used a concoction of dish soap, red pepper, oil and water. I watched them return unfazed as soon as the leaves dried. I’ve heard row covers, but that is expensive and isn’t it way too hot for row covers now? Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!
I was checking around to find where to buy a praying mantis and ran across this. Poor lil humming bird……praying mantis is eating him. Hhttp://www.birdwatchersdigest.com/site/backyardbirds/hummingbirds/mantis-hummer.aspx?sc=birdwireJul2005Here is the link if you want to see it, it’s gross.

Praying mantids! Get a few egg cases at the local garden store or nursery. You can probably find them online too! When they are tiny, they eat aphids and tiny bugs and when they grow up, they eat larger bugs. Even black widow spiders! Their venom doesn’t affect the mantids. Go for it! I should buy some too.

Along with your dish soap mix try adding a teaspoon of vegetable oil that has been heated with about a half teaspoon of garlic powder to the water first and shake it up real well to emulsify, then add the dish soap. The oil will prevent the surface from drying. Remember, the liquid may dry but the soap residue and garlic should still be doing it’s job. Insects hate the taste of garlic. If this doesn’t work you might go to a garden center and ask for a product called Safers Soap. It’s made for Organic Gardening and there should be a Safers Product for Leaf hoppers.

If you want to stay organic, you can use finely ground dry tobacco. Bugs hate dry tobacco but love it when its green. The best source for the fine ground tobacco is, “snuff”. You know the kind grandpa used {or grandma if you live in the south}. Just get a couple of cans and give your plants a light dusting, that should do the job. Happy Gardening.
