How come people can grow organic food?
Suzan K asked:
If every fruit or vegetable plant get infected by bugs and insects, from which we have a lot in our nature, how can people grow fruits and vegetables organically, without having those bugs on the plants?

They don’t want chemicals that can cause disease and sometimes death on their food. Lots of autoimmune diseases these days.

This is possible by:
1 - growing varieties of fruits and vegetables which show natural resistance to pests and diseases or have been bred for this resistance - the “Liberty” apple is one good example;
2 - using predator pests to keep the harmful populations down or “natural” oils like “Neem” and horticultural oils;
3 - being patient and vigilant;
4 - accepting a fair amount of pest and disease blemish - or even loss of a crop in a bad season - on fruits and vegetables

It simply means that the grower deals with insects and diseases with natural methods instead of chemicals. It means working with nature instead of against nature. Some times the results are not as pretty or consistant, but neither are they contaminated with toxins. Food doesn’t have to be perfect to see to be great food. Nor isall perfect looking food, healthy. Remember the Big Perfect Apple given to Snow White? Dropped her in her tracks.

my mother spends several hours in her organic garden per day, picking bugs off her plants and killing them. there are also non-toxic ways of killing pests like attracting slugs with a saucer of beer.

Companion planting help keep many harmful insects from each other.
Having healthy rich soil, which keeps the plants healthy, keeps most bugs away. (most bugs go after weak and malnourished plants)
Don’t forget that throughout the existence of people, all farming was done organically until this past century. That’s why you should be educated about plants and the like before starting to grow them.
It’s very easy to grow a highly successful organic garden when you know what you’re doing…

an organically fed plant is less likely to be attacked by insects. they have an offensive taste to the bugs, but more nutritive value and better taste to us.

Susan the answer is in the question. Organic is organic. However, growing organically* (*it’s a fashion term only) usually means growing without chemicals in excess, for all plants have traces of chemical elements. lol. The bugs on the plants are an addendum rather than an excess of chemical material. Also remember that many bugs grow by eating the plants and debris they inhabit.
Now for the crunch: organic means a “state”, which includes rocks, earth, plants, and living creatures including you and I.
The use of the word “organic” is as crazy as saying farm produce is grown “free range” - when free range when used on the packaging of eggs (for example) only means that the birds can see access to daylight, it is no guarantee that the chickens are outside in a natural environment. But this question goes on and on and on. The only way to stop the use of misleading words - is to qualify the language. The worst (probably) word is “quality” when used in the context “Quality work” “Quality designs”. These words need the addition of a qualifying word such as “Highest Quality” or “Best Quality - we can achieve” - how many trades people use that much honesty Susan?
